If you have a type 1 in your family or you are a type 1 between kindergarten and 12th grade we invite you and your family to join us for our second meeting:
Thursday
May 19th
6PM
Grand Mesa Middle School
At this meeting we will start with a 15 minute project, a 15-20 minute professional information speech and end with adult discussion and kid visiting time.
Just so you know we will be creating some other events throughout the year and meeting roughly every three months as a group. We would like to do a JDRF Mentoring Project here, a JDRF Walk for the Cure at the schools and maybe join the large walk in Denver at Elitch Gardens. We would like to have and are planning a teen meeting / group. We also are working toward working with Community Hospital and the Mesa State Nursing Program on some other fun future events. If you are interested in helping with any of these or want to be a part of them please email and let us know.
See you soon!
A support, awareness and mentoring group created for type 1 diabetics from kindergarten to 12th grade and their families. The goal of the group has three parts: for the community at large to understand more about type 1 diabetes, for kindergarten to 12th grade type 1 diabetics to; get to know, help and enjoy one another through local events and mentoring and finally, that the families of these type 1 diabetics will also recieve support from local professionals and one another.

Our 1st Meeting was a Success!
I am super pleased to share the news that we had 5 wonderful families join us for our first meeting. Thank you all for showing up and sharing! I look forward to our next meeting when hopefully we will see more new faces!
We decided that meeting quarterly was what would work best for all the families who attended so our next meeting will be at the end of May before everyone leaves town for summer vacation. I also talked about needing parent volunteers to help run things and was very pleasantly suprised to find out that almost all of the parents were interested in volunteering at least a few hours a month to get us up and running. Thank you for the support everyone!
JDRF offers a really neat back pack full of goodies for type 1's and most of you did not know that so I am telling you now if you have not recieved a 'Bag of Hope' from them please contact JDRF in Denver and get one! Who doesn't like shwag?! The bag is full of information and has a suprise for you type 1 kids and it even has an insulated pocket for your insulin suplies.
Mentoring seems to be a big hit and we want to encourage that so we will be working to get those who would like to have a mentor set up as soon as possible. JDRF offers a great program for mentoring and we will be utilizing it as much as possible. If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee please let us know with an email. Along side this we think it would be great to get some type 1 teens and young adults who would be interested Red Cross certified to baby sit and share the list with all type 1 parents because it's always nice to have someone you can feel comfortable with watching your child and what young person would not want to make a little extra money?
Finally, I just want to say thank you for keeping an eye on the blog and if you would like to comment or email please do so. If you were not able to make this meeting we will have other meetings and events and we look forward to meeting you.
Have a great day!

Please Join Us for our 1st Meeting-Friday March 4th
1st EditionHello! Welcome to the Diabetes Counts Blog. Diabetes Counts is a support group put together by the family of a type 1 diabetic to; help spread information about what type 1 diabetes is in the local community, help get type 1 students from kindergarten to 12 grade together for mentoring and fun and to give parents of type 1 diabetics in the local area as many resources and as much support as possible.
Where are we located?
Grand Junction, Colorado
When will we meet?
Well, our first meeting will be March 4th, 2011 Friday.
Who will be there?
We invite all type 1 diabetics however, we do focus on kindergarten through 12th grade and their families.
We have invited local professionals like doctors, nurses, school district nurses, diabetes educators and nutrition specialists to join us!
What is the plan for the meeting?
To meet and greet and let everyone know what we are about. We will have food and drink and those who were a part of getting this off the ground will be there to share our vision.
We will also do what we can to partner with other outside resources like JDRF, ADA and the Barbra Davis Center in Denver to let others know we are here and share the word with the local community about type 1 diabetes because as the old saying goes, knowledge is power and with this condition that is especially true.
We look forward to future posts and to seeing you at our next meeting!
Sincerely,
Diabetes Counts
