Thank you!
Diabetes Counts would like to thank a few important people for joining us and supporting us for our first ever ride in the Tour of the Valley!

On August 28th, 2011 at 6:30 AM we started arriving at the hotel with our bikes, meters, pumps, water, glucose, and whatever else we may have needed and getting ready to ride 15-30 miles.  The weather was overcast and warm and even though it was early it was beautiful out.

Our youngest member, a 6 year old type 1, was very inspiring planning to ride as much of 15 miles as he could on his bike.  At 7AM we assembled with our bikes in front of the hotel where the ride started and took a photo as a team.  We had the representative from Sanofi Aventis, a Team Type 1 rider and her family, our Community Hospital sponsored CDE and her husband, and two familys with 3 type 1 kids.

We finally got on our bikes and we were off to a great start!  Our group made it all 15 miles in about 2 hours and when we reached the rest stop we congratulated each other and some of us decided despite the looming clouds, ominous thunder and lightning to go ahead and ride back after part of us decided to go home.  The ride back was just as fun although, we did get cold and very wet it was a good time and the scenery all day was just wonderful.  Upon arriving back at the finish our 12 year old type 1 who rode all 30 miles said she was proud of herself for making it because she did not think she was going to when she started.

Way to go everyone and thank you to all of you for showing up!  Maybe next year we will have even more families join us and the rain will wait so that we can all finish the entire 30 miles.

Our 1st Meeting was a Success!

I am super pleased to share the news that we had 5 wonderful families join us for our first meeting.  Thank you all for showing up and sharing!  I look forward to our next meeting when hopefully we will see more new faces!

We decided that meeting quarterly was what would work best for all the families who attended so our next meeting will be at the end of May before everyone leaves town for summer vacation.  I also talked about needing parent volunteers to help run things and was very pleasantly suprised to find out that almost all of the parents were interested in volunteering at least a few hours a month to get us up and running.  Thank you for the support everyone!

JDRF offers a really neat back pack full of goodies for type 1's and most of you did not know that so I am telling you now if you have not recieved a 'Bag of Hope' from them please contact JDRF in Denver and get one!  Who doesn't like shwag?!  The bag is full of information and has a suprise for you type 1 kids and it even has an insulated pocket for your insulin suplies.

Mentoring seems to be a big hit and we want to encourage that so we will be working to get those who would like to have a mentor set up as soon as possible.  JDRF offers a great program for mentoring and we will be utilizing it as much as possible.  If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee please let us know with an email.  Along side this we think it would be great to get some type 1 teens and young adults who would be interested Red Cross certified to baby sit and share the list with all type 1 parents because it's always nice to have someone you can feel comfortable with watching  your child and what young person would not want to make a little extra money?

Finally, I just want to say thank you for keeping an eye on the blog and if you would like to comment or email please do so. If you were not able to make this meeting we will have other meetings and events and we look forward to meeting you.

Have a great day!

Diabetes Counts

Diabetes Counts
Please Join Us for our 1st Meeting-Friday March 4th
1st Edition

Hello! Welcome to the Diabetes Counts Blog.  Diabetes Counts is a support group put together by the family of a type 1 diabetic to; help spread information about what type 1 diabetes is in the local community, help get type 1 students from kindergarten to 12 grade together for mentoring and fun and to give parents of type 1 diabetics in the local area as many resources and as much support as possible.

Where are we located?
Grand Junction, Colorado

When will we meet?
Well, our first meeting will be March 4th, 2011 Friday.

Who will be there?
We invite all type 1 diabetics however, we do focus on kindergarten through 12th grade and their families.
We have invited local professionals like doctors, nurses, school district nurses, diabetes educators and nutrition specialists to join us!

What is the plan for the meeting?
To meet and greet and let everyone know what we are about.  We will have food and drink and those who were a part of getting this off the ground will be there to share our vision.

We will also do what we can to partner with other outside resources like JDRF, ADA and the Barbra Davis Center in Denver to let others know we are here and share the word with the local community about type 1 diabetes because as the old saying goes, knowledge is power and with this condition that is especially true.

We look forward to future posts and to seeing you at our next meeting!

Sincerely,
Diabetes Counts
